May Day Workshops

Preservation Australia is conducting series of half day disaster workshops. The workshops are run in the first week of May to coincide with other May Day events.

Risk and Significance Assessment - Monday 3 May

Identifying the risks to your collection is an essential component of a disaster plan. In this half-day seminar we will discuss how to determine the possible risks to your collection, looking at location, past and current risks, and likelihood of occurrence. Strategies for reducing and eliminating these risks will be explored and participants will conduct a practical risk assessment. Identifying your significant objects is also vital to an effective disaster preparedness plan. Procedures for categorizing your collection into levels of significance will be examined, and attendees will leave with an understanding of this critical area.

Planning - Tuesday 4 May

The disaster plan can often be seen as an enormous task that is never completed. This 1/2 day seminar is designed to simplify this task. Participants can bring along their plan, (in any stage of development) and we will "workshop" the plans to ensure that they will be useful, applicable and valued in the work place. The day will be interactive, collaborative and practical to address the needs of individual collections, organizations and differing infrastructures.

Recovery - Wednesday 5 May

When disaster strikes an organized recovery action is critical to the survival of the collection. This 1/2 day workshop will be a practical session in recovering wet library and archive materials. The participants will form into teams to devise recovery strategies and plans. The day will provide the essential experience in handling and managing a disaster scene.

Participants can attend one or more workshops. One session $180, two sessions $350 and three sessions $500

All workshops are held from 9am to 12pm at Sydney Mechanics School of Arts in Pitt St, Sydney.
